The Better Half

Every so often, there comes a time in most people's lives when you feel dissatisfied with it. You feel like you aren't getting anywhere, haven't achieved anything. You watch others do and achieve everything you dreamed of, while you feel stuck in the same old place, in the same old rut. In short, you feel envious. Envious that everyone else has a seemingly better life than yourself, and you find yourself sinking into despair, feeling desolate that everyone is speeding ahead while you're left behind in this thing we call The Rat Race.

It is at times like this when I think (more immediately now than I used to!) of the other half. Or the better half as I like to think of him. And things seem a hundred times better. To think you have someone incredibly special, incredibly amazing, who would put up with a thousand times more of your sh*t just to be with you, is mind blowing. And extremely humbling. It makes you realise that no matter now rubbish things may be in your life, the one constant remains. He calms you when you are raging, soothes you when you are crying and holds you like he'll never let you go when he's with you. And you realise what's really important. I believe if there is just one person in this world who loves you like that, it is enough. Enough to make you stop questioning everything (maybe not completely, but certainly to a huge extent) and appreciate them, everything they say, everything they do. Mostly everything you feel when you are with them or talking to them. And you feel sated. Calmer. And realise that really, isn't that it? Isn't love bigger than anything else in this world that really matters?

So I dedicate this to you. My better half. And I leave you with this quote by Roy Croft, which pretty much sums up how I feel:

"I love you not only for what you are, but for what I am when I am with you. I love you not only for what you have made of yourself, but for what you are making of me. I love you for the part of me that you bring out.”
