I saw an interesting article today on the BBC about the conundrums of puns. This age-old form of somewhat humorous, very witty writing has, for years, illicited an almost guilty pleasure response; a groan followed by clapping or a pat on the back for being so 'clever with words.'
I personally love them. Having a dry sense of humour means I can perhaps appreciate them more than others who don't seem to share my love of sarcasm (!) (Pun intended. Sorry. It had to be done). Distinctively wry, 'punning' seems to have become the modern-day equivalent of being witty. From Shakespeare to Central Perk in Friends, writers old and new have come up with more and more innovative and creative ways to use The Pun, whether it be in daily life, or in their writing.
To pun or not to pun? (Pun very much intended).
